In this sad story we see a blind
couple who fell into a train track pit:
A seeing-eye dog leading a blind couple through a station
fell over the edge of a platform with the couple Sunday, leaving
one of them injured, officials said.
The 52-year-old woman who was injured in the accident, which
occurred at Shin-Yamaguchi Station in Oguri early on Sunday,
suffered cuts to her forehead and was taken to hospital.
Fortunately there was not train coming at the time. The injury was
blamed on a mistake by the seeing-eye dog:
The accident is thought to have occurred because of a
mistake by the dog, but there were no textured paving blocks for
blind users in the area where the accident occurred. Blind users
say the accident could have been prevented if textured blocks
and fences had been placed at the station. West Japan Railway
Co. (JR West), which manages the station, is investigating the
incident.
This story reminds all guide animal trainers of the importance of
safety and how blind people entrust their lives in the judgment of
their guide animals.
